My work reflects an intimate relationship with nature, whether it is a landscape or an individual element such as a flower, insect, fruit or tree. Many of my pictures depict nature in close proximity, from varying viewpoints such as a bee on a flower or looking up at the sky through leaves and branches.
Although my style tends towards realism, it portrays impressions of my perception. I work in a variety of media - watercolor, pastels, oils and particularly acrylics.
I like layering sequential washes and glazes on paper or canvas to create the subtle colors, textures and modeling of the subject. I particularly like to work with the subtleties and vibrancy of colors, demonstrating the beauty of natural light.
Art has always been an interest in my life and I have often relaxed with a sketchbook. As a geography and geology teacher at English high schools, I encouraged my students to do field sketches as a way to record the relationship of the landscape and its underlying geology.
To widen the scope of my art, I joined the Corcoran McLean Project for the Arts, studying watercolor with Margaret Huddy and Barbara Januszkievicz, drawing and pastels with J. Lea Lansaw and Marise Riddell, 'Mixed Media and Abstract Art' with Afaf Zurayk, and 'Painting - Abstracting from Nature' with Sharon Fishel.
My paintings have been accepted into juried shows in Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. They have been shown at the Ramp Gallery at the McLean Project for the Arts, Galerie Europa in Reston, The Spectrum Gallery in Washington DC and the Gallery in Oakland, Maryland. I am a member of Great Falls Studios and I also show my art in private shows in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. My pictures are in private and corporate collections in America, Canada and the United Kingdom.
You can view some of my recent paintings using the Picture Gallery link above.
I undertake commissions on Paper and Canvas, if there is a gallery picture that is already sold I would be happy to paint a similar picture on request. I can paint your favorite flower, landscape or animal. Recent commissions can be seen in the current Animal and Flowers Galleries.
Living in wooded northern Virginia near Great Falls on the Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay gives me a wonderful environment in which to paint. I never travel anywhere without my paints and a camera. This has led to recent paintings in Switzerland, England, Italy, Colorado and California.
